The Calgary Stampede is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. Over the past century, they’ve welcomed millions of visitors to enjoy the greatest outdoor show on earth. The festivities over ten days in July features one of the world’s largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuck wagon racing, First Nations exhibitions, and Western art shows.
A volunteer-supported, not-for-profit organization, the Stampede’s goals are to preserve and promote western heritage and values. The event’s roots are traced to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. In 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick organized his first rodeo and festival, known as the Stampede. He returned to Calgary in 1919 to organize the Victory Stampede in honour of soldiers returning from World War I. Weadick’s festival became an annual event in 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition to create the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.
100 years strong, we are incredibly honoured to be the first small winery that the Stampede has ever partnered with for their official wine. Our Limited Edition Centennial Selection Merlot and Chardonnay are available in Alberta on the Stampede grounds and in BC at our two wineries. Check out our special Stampede page for more information on the wines.
Look for proprietors Mike and Lori Raffan with their Centennial wines at Stampede festivities:
