Did you know that grape stomping is part of the method of maceration used in traditional winemaking? Instead of being crushed in a wine press, grapes are trampled in vats or barrels by barefoot participants to release their juices and begin fermentation. Grape stomping was widespread in the history of winemaking with reports dating back to the Roman Empire of the harvesting and stomping grapes at a Vendemmia (grape festival). Now of course it is done primarily for fun!
